Overall Purpose: To become shaman king and fulfil his promise to his fiance , Anna Kyoyama.
Background: Yoh is Hao Asakura's twin brother , both were born near to the shaman tournament , but their parents had to kill them at birth , but their father (mikihisa asakura) hesitated to kill both of them , their chance was missed and hao gained his powers and his spirit of fire and vanished , so yoh has to become a strong shaman to stop his ancestor from becoming shaman king , 13 years after this , yoh began to take becoming a shaman seriously , he needed to find a gaurdien ghost , along the way , he met a strangely small boy , manta (or in the english version: morty) he is oddly short for his age , morty can see spirits too , he found yoh at monument hill , yoh was surrounded by ghosts having a "party" and morty got freaked out and ran , later on yoh comes to mortys school , morty freaks out and tells his tale of yoh and monument hill , but everyone just laughs , yoh has a hard time because he can see ghosts and he doesn't want anyone to know that he can , if people knew he can see ghosts and he is a shaman , then he is outcasted like in his last school and is treated as the phrase: "black sheep" so he denys everything of morty's tale , soon after morty tried to confront yoh and go to monument hill , but then morty meets ryu the head of the dead enders , he scares morty and morty is seen injured and covered in bandages the next day , everyone says that he is joking and crazy because of seeing ghosts but then yoh steps in saying ghosts are real , non of the students belive them , soon after Yoh takes morty to monument hill to get revenge (but this is for two things , one ryu had broken amedamaru , an assassin from 600 years ago tomb two to get revenge for morty) so , he meets the dead enders , in seconds he preforms spirit unity with a ghost "amedamaru" and beats the dead enders running them out of monument hill , Yoh fixes the tomb for amedamaru , he then asks amedamaru to become his gaurdien ghost , but amedamaru refuses he was waiting for someone , it had been 600 years , it was for his friend "mosuke" a skilled black smith and amedamaru's childhood friend , yoh finds mosuke in the museum of history , it was said that mosuke's last sword was kept there , they stayed the night in the museum and found the sword and mosuke. mosuke was in tears every night for his friend who had died , amedamaru , both were killed together , mosuke had finished the sword but kept another hour weilding it to make it perfect , but that was his mistake and amedamaru was killed , so yoh fixes the sword of light by preforming spirit unity with mosuke , they bring the sword to amedamaru and amedamaru feels complete so he is to move onto the spirit world , yoh and morty are attacked by ryu and so amedamaru forgets going to the spirit world and helps Yoh and becomes his guardien ghost after . this is how yoh became a shaman , after he gets intense training from anna kyoyama he fights silva to get an oracle bell to enter the tournament , this is where he learns over soul , putting a spirit ball of a ghost into a weapon , (spirit control in english version) and he beats silva , the task was to land one hit on silva , yoh learns of furyoku , a energy used for spirit control/oversoul , he is now in the shaman tournament , 1st round , he has to gain 2/3 wins , his first opponent: horohoro , shaman of ice , yoh wins this battle
second opponent: Faust viii bone yard sourcerer , yoh loses this match due to faust draining yoh's furyoku before the fight had started , faust had then captured morty , this made yoh rage and use up more furyoku and so yoh lost
third opponent: tao ren , ren and yoh drawed in this match both losing all their furyoku at the same time and both moving onto the next round of the tournament.
they have to find doubee village in the second round of the tournament , but doubee village was a shaman only village and so morty could not join , yoh and the gang enjoyed their last day , then yoh , ren , horohoro and ryu set off to find doubee village , but it was like it didn't exsist , doubee village could not be found anywhere , but they eventually find it , by this time, 2 more members had joined the gang , lyserg diethel and chocolove mcdonnell , they all found doubee village and were in for the second round , then faust viii joined so the team was: yoh , ren , horohoro , ryu , faust , lyserg and chocolove , anna and morty joined in doubee village to watch their fights , the team had to be split into two , team asakura and team "the ren" , Yoh and the gang had trained and trained , Yoh had obtained the spirit of earth from the patch tribe ,it was said that 5 elemental spirits belong to their true elemental warriors , Yoh was the spirit of earths elemental warrior , Yoh and the others trained in hell for a while , increasing their furyoku and making them much more powerful than any of the other contestents in the shaman tournament , But Yoh still knew , that hao was much more powerful than him and his friends , Yoh watched most of the X-laws perish at hao's hand , the x-laws were defeated , there was only lyserg , marcko and their leader , jeanne , lyserg had become the most powerfull x-law and had obtained the spirit of fire , lyserg was the true owner of the spirit of fire , Yoh had become angry with Hao for killing so much , he swore he would defeat him and put an end to his dream of a shaman only kingdom , he was sick and tired of it all , he had known that hao was gonna cheat , and as he had predicted , hao had found the location of the star sanctuary dimmension , he had set off to get the king of spirits , capture him and use him to create a new world , Yoh had to forfeit the shaman tournament to go try to stop Hao , at the last part , infront of the sanctuary , Hao had beaten yoh , Hao wanted yoh to join him and they would rule the world together as brothers , but yoh wasn't going to give up , he was going to defeat hao , he didn't care how , but Hao consumed yoh's spirit and was slowly digesting it , yoh's slumbering body lie , he was basically dead for a few minutes , the others raged and fought hao , not fighting calmly how yoh taught them , but fighting as if they were filled with rage and anger, but morty reminded them that raging wasn't going to get them anywhere , so they fought calm and jokatively , but they were still angry about yoh's death , they would avenge them ,there crys , yoh had heard them while he was inside hao , he fought back , and brought himself back to his own body , he was back to life , he fought hao with the others , full power , hao then absorbed the king of spirits and united it with the spirit of fire , yet yoh had become much powerfuller , and from everybodys hope , he had become a temporary shaman king , amedamaru had fused with yoh and they became one for a moment , yoh felt this was what it was like to become shaman king , and so they defeated hao with the ease of one slice , after that , the shaman tournament was posponed for a while , Yoh was waiting for it to start back up again
